Job Purpose:

Working under the direction of the executive director and program manager, and in collaboration with program staff and other internal and external colleagues, the business advisor provides ongoing coaching and mentoring service to clients across Canada. The business advisor has extensive business knowledge from business concept to launch and operation, and enjoys imparting that knowledge to others. Through online delivery—using telephone, email, Skype, and our virtual classroom and social networks—the business advisor will encourage participants to explore their readiness for self-employment, research and develop their business idea, write their business plan, and ultimately launch their business. The business advisor will also provide support to those clients who choose employment over self-employment as their career path. This is a 28-hour-per-week position.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Completes all duties in accordance with the mission and the goals of the organization
  • Provides business guidance and feedback to clients at an advanced level (including but not limited to forms of business, legal considerations, business strategy, business management, marketing and promotion, finance/accounting, and business plans)
  • Effectively manages a caseload of clients in multiple geographic locations and varying demographic profiles
  • Utilizes organization’s collaboration tools, resources/knowledge base, and processes
  • Actively maintains knowledge of current trends and issues in the labour market and the economy
  • Actively maintains knowledge of resources available to clients through employment, self-employment, social service, disability, funding, and other organizations at the national and local levels
  • Contributes effectively to the case management process, team meetings, and strategic planning sessions
  • Conducts ongoing communication with clients, staff, and colleagues; Uses a professional approach and maintains responsiveness
  • Prepares and gives presentations to clients and the public
  • Tracks and reports progress as required
  • Completes other duties as assigned

Education and Experience:

  • Minimum bachelor degree in a business-related field and five years of direct experience in owning and operating a business or a business unit, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Experience working with underserved populations, including people living with a disability, in an employment or voluntary role
  • Experience in public speaking
  • Experienced in using standard programs such as MS Office, Adobe Acrobat, and Skype, and technology such as desktop sharing, audio/visual presentation, etc.
  • Typing speed of minimum 50 words per minute

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to create a relationship of trust and openness with clients while maintaining an assertive approach
  • Enjoys mentoring others toward achieving their goals
  • Requires minimal direction; Self-directed in approach to work
  • Ability to demonstrate compassion, empathy, and a non-judgmental approach
  • Ability to maintain tact and diplomacy in communications while adhering to privacy and client confidentiality policies
  • Ability to solve problems independently, while also ensuring that policy is appropriately applied
  • Able to maintain accuracy and attention to detail
  • Technically savvy; Able to learn and adopt new programs and technical processes
  • Sound electronic file management practices
  • Specialized experience in a segment of the economy or facet of business development (e.g., online business, green business, new product development, artist/artisan businesses, the tech sector) an asset
  • Bilingual in English and French an asset
