The Metro Toronto Movement for Literacy (MTML)

Formed in 1978 by concerned groups and individuals to support and promote the advancement of adult literacy in the region, the Metro Toronto Movement for Literacy (MTML) began during a period when low income families, including home grown Canadians and immigrants, were struggling with learning challenges and finding jobs appropriate to their skill level. It began and continues to be a network of people and ideas concerned about adult literacy. Our mission is to provide a voice for adult literacy in the Toronto and York Region. As the Regional Literacy Network, MTML collaborates with its members to share knowledge, build awareness and promote confidence and lifelong learning among its learners.

MTML is responsible for the coordination of services to thirty-six programs delivering Basic literacy and Academic Upgrading programs. These programs are delivered in four streams and three sectors. The streams are Anglophone, Francophone, Native and Deaf-Deaf-Blind; and the sectors are Community-based, Colleges and School Boards. Part of our mandate is to provide training to the literacy and basic skills (LBS) practitioners, coordination of services between the adult Literacy programs, government agencies, non-LBS agencies, and the general public to ensure that those who are in need of literacy services receive the information they are seeking.

 

Board of Directors Treasurer Role

The successful candidate must prepare for and attend all Board meetings (10 annually) and Executive Committee meetings that may occur throughout the year, as well as serve as the chair of the Finance Committee of the board.

Qualifications:

  • Professional expertise in accounting and finance, a CPA designation is highly encouraged.
  • High level of administrative, organizational and leadership skills.
  • Knowledgeable about non-profit board governance and previous non-profit board experience is an asset.
  • Demonstrated interest in the mission and vision of the organization.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.

Duties include:

  • Serve as an officer of the organization.
  • Serve as a signing authority of the organization with respect to banking and on the annual audited and approved financial statements.
  • Participate in the creation of sustainable annual budgets and oversight of those budgets.
  • Monitor actual vs. budgeted results and report any significant changes to the Board on a quarterly basis.
  • Render an account of the Organization’s financial transactions and of the financial position of the Organization, at the request of the directors.
  • Keep generally informed about the activities of the organization, the community / literacy issues that affect the organization, and general trends in the environment in which the organization operaties.
  • Liaise with staff for financial management, including providing practical guidance to the Office Manager on related matters.
  • Interact with an external auditor and support MTML through the annual audit to ensure timely completion.
  • Participate in the creation of sustainable annual budgets and oversight of those budgets.
  • Ensure that the Organization prepares and maintains adequate accounting records in compliance with the Not-for-Profit Corporations Act.
  • Review financial policies and procedures and ensure adequacy.
  • Be responsible for the safekeeping of securities and the disbursement of the funds of the Organization.
  • Monthly review of payroll reports to ensure consistency with employee contracts and that appropriate withholdings and employer contributions are made.
  • Ensure that an accurate Registered Charity Information Return (T3010) is filed with Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) within six months of MTML’s year end, as required by law.
  • Perform other duties from time to time as prescribed by the Board of Directors.

Commitment:

  • On a monthly basis, review finances with the Office Manager and Bookkeeper.
  • On a quarterly basis, review and present a financial statement package for the Board, including a comparison of budgeted to actual financial results.
  • On an annual basis, prepare the annual budget and support the Office Manager with the annual audit.
  • Chair the Finance Committee: The Finance Committee provides fiscal oversight of MTML, including oversight of audit, budgeting, financial reporting, expense management, related policies and procedures. The treasurer will lead the Finance Committee and report to the Board at regular intervals about the financial matters of the organization.
  • The time commitment usually averages 8-12 hours per month.
  • The treasurer is eligible to serve on the Board of Directors for 2 consecutive 2-year terms.
