We are Building Up – Toronto’s leading social enterprise contractor. We are a registered pre-apprenticeship program and non-profit construction company that uses renovations and affordable housing development as an opportunity to train and employ individuals with barriers to employment to get into the construction sector. 

Job Profile: Therapist / Counsellor

We are looking to add an experienced therapist / counsellor to our team, part-time (3 days per week) for a period of 7.5 months. The selected candidate will support our program participants through one-on-one counselling sessions, conducted by video call, phone, or in-person (COVID-19 permitting). As this role will support a variety of participants who work during the daytime, the hours will vary and may include evening and weekend sessions with clients. This is a new role for our organization, developed to help meet the mental health needs of our program participants. 

Position Responsibilities: 

  • Conduct individual sessions with program participants via a secure virtual platform, telephone or in-person (COVID-19 permitting). The candidate will conduct an average of three to five, 45-60-minute client sessions per day

  • Create and maintain progress notes, reports and any other written material required, in a timely manner

  • Participate in weekly Case Manager meetings, providing insights to support case manager interventions 

  • Ensure all aspects of confidentiality and data protection relating to program participants

  • Engage in appropriate, external clinical supervision (outside of Building Up) on an as-needed basis 

  • Attend and be an active participant in team meetings, team training and other internal team meetings, etc.

  • Report to the Director of Case Management and senior staff members, and work alongside Case Management team

Necessary Qualifications

  • Minimum of 2-years of experience working as a therapist or counsellor

  • Master’s degree in Social Work, Psychology, Counselling, Mental Health or other related health field (preferred) 

  • Carry professional liability insurance

  • Be a member in good standing with a college or professional association

  • Experienced in using a range of modalities to support clients, which may include: Dialectical Behaviour Therapy, Attachment-Based therapy, Sensorimotor Psychotherapy, Relational therapy, Motivational Interviewing, Solution Focused Brief Therapy, Internal Family Systems, or otherwise. 

  • Use an anti-oppressive, anti-racism-informed, LGBTQ2S+ affirming, anti-ableist approach to therapy 

  • Strong crisis intervention/conflict management skills

  • Experience in working with BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Colour) clients 

  • Experience supporting clients with a variety of mental health needs, including those with diagnoses of depression, anxiety, FASD, PTSD, mood disorders; and clients experiencing suicidality, self-harm, addictions, relationship issues, grief, and otherwise 

  • Access to strong, reliable internet for the purpose of delivering virtual sessions and access to a noise-free, secure location to host client sessions to ensure client privacy and confidentiality 

Work Environment:

  • Job Type: Part-time, flexible, 3 days / week (can be any three days per week) 

  • Contract: $33/h for 3 days a week for 7.5 months 

  • Start date: August 17, 2020

  • End date: March 31, 2021
