Stanley Park Ecology Society is seeking new Board members. We are looking for individuals with governance, environmental and conservation interests, as well as experience with fundraising initiatives. In addition, we seek a member willing to serve as a Board Secretary.

Stanley Park Ecology Society (SPES)

SPES is an independent non-profit charity that was established to serve as a leading Park Partner in Stanley Park and Vancouver’s metropolitan region. Incorporated in 1988 as the education and conservation arm of the Stanley Park Zoo, it operated throughout the Lower Mainland with school and hospice education programs, as well as habitat enhancements focused on species at risk. Refocused following the closure of the zoo, it now offers programs in education and conservation. For more information:


Stanley Park Ecology Society promotes awareness of and respect for the natural world and plays a leadership role in the stewardship of Stanley Park through collaborative initiatives in education, research, and conservation.


SPES is governed under the British Columbia Society Act. Following a governance model, the volunteer Board sets direction through strategic planning; acts as a trustee of the organization’s assets ensuring it is well managed and fiscally sound; maintains legal requirements; and sets the standards of conduct for the organization. SPES is governed by a Board of Directors that includes members with expertise in education, ecology, and non-profit management.


Term: Directors serve for a two-year term which may be renewed.

Time Commitment: Board members are asked to attend seven scheduled meetings along with at least one bi-monthly committee meeting. Committees include Governance, Finance, Marketing and Communications, and People (Human Resources).

Requirements of Board Membership:

  • Maintain an active SPES membership
  • Commit to the work of the SPES
  • Attend Board meetings and strategic planning sessions
  • Become fully informed about SPES’ mission as well as its organizational matters
  • Commit to volunteering at least six to ten hours per month
  • Attend the Annual General Meeting
  • Be informed of, and publicly support, the services provided by SPES and publicly support them
  • Agree to serve on additional committees as required
  • Support special events and participate in fundraisers
