We operate at the intersection of hunger relief and environmental protection, tackling food loss and waste through food redistribution, research, awareness, and education, continually innovating, and collaborating to ensure a more sustainable planet. We work with thousands of food businesses from across the supply chain utilizing logistics and technology to reduce the amount of edible food going to waste, thereby diverting unnecessary greenhouse gases from entering the environment. 

Reporting to the Vice President of Food Rescue Operations, the Senior Manager, Northern Operations is responsible for building our food rescue and redistribution strategy into northern communities through community consultation and collaboration with Indigenous and territorial governments, communities and non-profit organizations, food donors, and logistics partners. This new position within the National Operations department will work closely with our Food Recovery & Partnerships department, our Fleet and Warehouse team, and our regional operations staff to lead food distribution in the Northern Territories, as well as northern and remote regions in provinces across Canada.

We are looking for an adaptive, collaborative, and strategic thinker to join our team to build and maintain strong relationships in northern communities to help us meet our annual community impact goals.

You Will
  • Lead Second Harvest’s community consultation efforts across the Northern Territories as well as northern and remote regions in all provinces to engage Indigenous and territorial governments, communities and non-profit organizations, food donors, and logistics partners to understand and support the varying needs and capacities of northern communities.
  • Develop, implement, and manage a Northern food distribution strategy that effectively leverages Second Harvest’s resources along with our community and industry partnerships to move food into the North. Work with Food Recovery & Partnerships, Fleet and Warehouse, and Operations staff to identify and evaluate opportunities for and risks associated with Northern expansion.
  • Build and maintain strong regional partnerships, working with many stakeholders including food businesses, logistics partners, Indigenous and territorial governments, and non-profit organizations to ensure long-term sustainability of our Northern Operations.
  • As a regional ambassador for Second Harvest, engage with diverse audiences to deliver presentations and participate in speaking engagements with the goal of increasing awareness and engagement across the Northern Territories, Northern and remote regions across Canada.
  • Support the Philanthropy and Strategic Partnerships division in their efforts to secure new funding that will ensure long-term sustainability of our Northern operations. Act as the key relationship manager for operations deliverables in grants supporting our work in the Northern Territories.
  • Collaborate with our Finance and Business Intelligence team, including Data and Analytics, to properly track food distribution data, organize purchase orders and invoicing from suppliers, and manage monthly Nutrition North Canada claims submissions.
  • Support the Marketing and Communications division to garner media interest and engagement that leads to increased awareness.
  • Track outreach activities (site visits, phone calls, emails), record touchpoints, collect feedback, impact stories, and photographs from stakeholders.
  • Create and review KPIs, business plans, benchmarks, and regional metrics to track progress to fiscal goals and celebrate success along the way. Oversee ongoing reporting and data collection to support continued growth and optimization.
  • Assess capacity gaps and opportunities to improve our food rescue operations, working with the team to collect and identify issues and improvements to enhance our operations.

  • Preference for candidates located in communities to be served 
  • Able to travel across Canada and have a Valid Class G or equivalent driver’s license (mileage compensated if using own vehicle).
