School Program Curriculum Development Volunteer - Vancouver Avian Research Centre

At VARC, we believe education is the first step in safeguarding birds and bird habitat. We offer a variety of public outreach programs for adults and youth to raise awareness of environmental issues as they relate to birds. Our youth and school programs are a great way to engage children as lifelong ambassadors of wild bird populations. Our programs explore how birds are a vital part of a healthy planet, the issues they face and what can be done today to ensure their long-term survival.

We are currently looking for people interested in helping us to further develop our course curriculum. If you enjoy creating content, have experience in either the education sector or in presentation and public speaking and would like to use these skills to help local bird wildlife, then this may be the volunteer opportunity for you!

As this is strictly a volunteer role, there will be no monetary compensation however, VARC will provide all training & materials required.

RESPONSIBILITIES OF ROLE:

Working with key people from our organization you will help develop educational presentations that are fun and engaging. We are looking to develop presentations for the following age groups/school levels:

  • Ages 5 through 7

  • Ages 8 through 13

  • Highschool Students

  • College/University Students

  • Adults of all ages

Successful candidates will be responsible for the following:

  • Working with key VARC employees on content

  • Creating unique and engaging content

  • Keeping presentation length within an hour

  • Tailoring the content to the appropriate grade curriculum

  • Developing Teacher’s Support package and necessary handouts/materials

SKILLS/REQUIREMENTS:

Successful candidates should have the following skills and requirements:

  • Experience in the educational sector or in public speaking & presentation

  • Have an interest or passion for local birds and wildlife

  • Have access to own computer

  • High level communication and conversational skills

  • Be responsible, professional and extremely reliable.

  • Love children!

  • Great organizational skills
