Project Coordinator Compass: An LGBTQ, Race & Disability Justice Project - Griffin Centre

Griffin Centre is currently hiring one part-time employee on a nine-month contract basis from September 2019 to June 2020. The position is for 28-hours per week.
reachOUT is a creative, inclusive & accessible program for lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, two-spirit, gender non-conforming and queer (LGBTTGNCQ) people in the City of Toronto. In particular, we recognize the needs of youth and adults who experience multiple oppressions and work to create spaces with and for people who are traditionally excluded from mainstream services, including people of colour, trans, two-spirit and gender non-conforming people, and disabled people. We are committed to social justice, community building, education and advocacy to increase access, visibility and to strengthen our communities. As part of equitable representation, our staff team reflects the diversity of our queer, trans, two-spirit and gender non-conforming communities with the majority of our team members identifying as Black, Indigenous and people of colour.
Within reachOUT, we work in collaboration with lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, gender non-conforming and questioning (LGBTTQGNCQ) youth and adults who have been labelled with intellectual disabilities to build community, co-facilitate drop-in groups and develop and deliver accessible LGBTQ+ harm reduction educational materials.
The major position responsibilities include:
- Development and Implementation of Services for Queer, Trans and Two-Spirit People Labelled with Intellectual Disabilities: Coordinate the development and implementation of services and activities in collaboration with LGBTQ people labelled with intellectual disabilities, the project team, reachOUT program Supervisor and relevant stakeholders. This includes creating work plans and identifying activities and services that are responsive to evolving community needs.
- Workshop Development: Develop accessible harm reduction workshops with and for youth and adults labelled with intellectual disabilities, including visual aids that promote disability justice, race and Indigenous solidarity work. Conduct 36 arts-based workshops per year and a monthly session on harm reduction reaching 15 youth per year.
- Outreach and Event Planning: Facilitate relevant community outreach activities, with a focus on reaching LGBTQ disabled people of colour in designated communities. Investigate and devise innovative outreach strategies, including use of social media, to promote project.
- Group Facilitation/Coordination: Co-facilitate and coordinate a weekly group, called Compass, and a monthly group, called sprOUT Toronto, along with outings, with and for LGBTQ people labelled with intellectual disabilities.
- Community Engagement: Enhance and increase the effective contributions of LGBTQ people labelled with intellectual disabilities in organizations and communities across the greater Toronto area. Support community development through skills building and modeling anti-oppression, conflict resolution, boundary setting and effective communication when working with group members and Peer Educators/Mentors.
- Partnership Development: Connect with collaborating agencies, networks, organizations and schools across Toronto serving disabled people, with a focus on disabled people of colour. Participate in community committees and events as required.
- Documentation and Administration: Complete administrative documentation accurately and on a timely basis, including workshop evaluations and group summaries. As well as complete interim and final funding reports for project.
- Peer Mentorship: Support Peer Education model by mentoring three Peer Educators, one Peer Evaluator and group members in leadership positions to thrive in their roles.
We are interested in candidates with the following qualifications:
- College or university education and/or equivalent education and work experience in the areas of disability, youth engagement, project coordination and/or community development;
- Minimum 3 years frontline experience working in a community-based organization offering group facilitation, project coordination, curriculum development and outreach;
- A strengths-based, harm reduction, disability justice, anti-racism, anti-oppression, sex positive, trans-positive and youth engagement philosophy of service provision and a belief in the self-determination of LGBTQ+ people labelled with intellectual disabilities;
- Strong group facilitation skills and knowledge of group dynamics, boundary setting and conflict resolution skills that are grounded in anti-ableist and anti-racist practices;
- Experience working with disabled communities and an ability to provide service in community led approaches that are responsive to the needs of youth;
- Experience developing and leading interactive workshops and curricula focused activities on LGBTQ and disability related topics;
- Ability to work a flexible schedule, including some evenings and weekends, in order to meet client and program needs;
- A capacity to build and nurture working relationships with colleagues and partner agencies;
- A self-starter with an ability to work independently, as well as within a team structure;
- Above-average oral and written communication skills including report writing, excellent organizational abilities and time management;
- Knowledge of employment and social services for disabled people in Toronto and surrounding areas;
- Willingness to travel and provide services throughout the city as well as work off-site in alternate community sites (i.e., community hubs), organizations (i.e., health centres, schools, shelters) and in collaboration with cross-sector community-based organizations;
- Fluency in Tagalog, Spanish, Kiswahili, Yoruba, Igbo, Somali, Twi, Tigrinya or American Sign Language is an asset;
- Lived experiences of homophobia, transphobia, anti-black racism, racism and/or ableism and personal connection to Two-Spirit and queer and trans communities of colour, including disability communities are considered assets.
