Job Purpose and Scope:

Provide coordination and support on project activities related to the criminal and social justice fields which are consistent with the John Howard Society of Ontario’s (JHSO) mission and values.

Job Objectives:

  • Effective project management
  • Support strategic initiatives and partnership building activities
  • Expertise in social and criminal justice areas

Tasks, Duties, Responsibilities:

Legal Research

  • Provide legal research support and content development for the Civil Legal Needs project;
  • Responsible for developing, testing and revising legal education and training resources;
  • Facilitate consultations and outreach with project stakeholders;
  • Support the Civil Legal Needs Project Advisory Committee meetings;

Policy and Partnership Development

  • Manage project deliverables and timelines for JHSO’s Second Chance project;
  • Undertake research and interjurisdictional reviews;
  • Identify and build partnerships with key non-profit, public and private sector organizations in support of the Second Chance project;
  • Assist with the development of content, such as educational/training tools, for Second Chance project;
  • Assist with development of social media content;
  • Assist with funder reporting requirements and deliverables.

Additional responsibilities

  • Assist with additional strategic and government relations initiatives;
  • Participate and contribute to policy and research projects of the JHSO, as requested;
  • Prepare and deliver presentations to JHSO/stakeholders/community/government as required;
  • Participate in relevant committees and meetings, as required
  • Record and transcribe meeting minutes, as needed
  • Participate in wellness and safety training and other professional development;
  • Other duties as assigned from time to time.

Formal Education & Training, Knowledge Required for the Job:

  • Master’s level education in public policy, criminal justice and/or human sciences or Juris Doctor or equivalent;
  • Knowledge of the criminal and social justice systems which may occur either through specific university training in that area and/or through previous experience
  • Highly effective interpersonal and relationship building skills
  • Effective organizational and project management skills
  • Effective critical thinking and problem-solving abilities
  • Highly self-motivated
  • Demonstrated interest or experience in corporate social responsibility an asset

Work Experience:

  • Minimum 3 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience in public policy, criminal justice, and/or the legal field     
  • Demonstrated experience in developing successful collaborations and stakeholder engagement
  • Demonstrated experience in research and policy analysis

Language Skills:

  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Fluency in the English language, including the ability to prepare and present professional reports and research
  • French an asset

Salary Range:

$50,500 - $60,000
