Purpose of Position

The Indigenous Youth Diversion Program Coordinator develops and implements a culturally appropriate diversion and early intervention program for urban Indigenous youth (aged 13-18) and assists in the diversion of youth and their families from statutory child protection and youth justice systems.

Job Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Creates learning modules and other outreach materials for youth and community organizations; 
  • Maintains memoranda of understanding with local service agencies to ensure the bridging of services between law enforcement, other diversion programs and justice systems;
  • Works collaboratively with the youth team in order to ensure smooth program delivery to all youth clients;
  • Supports individual program participants with their healing goals, which includes taking an active role in leading program components;
  • Liaises with external evaluation team, which may include ensuring evaluation materials are completed as per the program’s evaluation protocol; Supports and participates in at least three overnight camping trips per year (these camps usually last an entire week);
  • Work collaboratively with all staff to create and support Wabano events such as the Annual General Meeting, Gala, and community holiday celebrations;
  • Produces quarterly program reports indicating outcome and process accomplishments, and;
  • Accepts responsibility for ensuring program objectives are met in a manner consistent with the quality of service and care for which Wabano is well known.

Qualifications:

  • Post-secondary completion in human services, youth justice or other applicable program;
  • Four years of experience with Indigenous youth work or youth programming;
  • Knowledge of social, economic and health concerns relevant to the urban Indigenous community and understanding of culture in contemporary society;
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate with and engage Indigenous youth;
  • Experience liaising and consulting with a wide range of community partners and stakeholders;
  • Strong oral and written communication skills evidenced by experience in report writing;
  • Effective organizational skills and negotiation skills with experience in handling sensitive issues with tact and diplomacy;
  • Experience with high risk and at risk youth;
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office tools, particularly Excel, Word and PowerPoint;
  • Ability to work flexible hours including evenings and weekends.

  • Clear criminal reference check to work with vulnerable population is required.
