General Function:

This position reports to the Finance Manager and is responsible for carrying out accounting functions for TNG. The Finance Assistant performs duties under general supervision using effectively established agency procedures and systems. Areas of responsibility include Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, bank deposits and reconciliation, journal and general ledger functions

  1. Service Responsibilities:
  • Process Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable and Revenues, bank deposits and bank reconciliation
  • Journals and general ledger functions
  • Disbursement Claims
  • Assist with preparation of lead sheets, schedules and necessary documentation for the Auditor
  • Liaise with representatives of organizations that relate to the agency’s financial business
  • Provide financial information to staff and suppliers
  • Responsible for filing Tax Returns (HST, Property Tax)
  • Interface with the Data Base coordinator on donors’ data
  • Completion of “Charitable Property Tax Rebate” applications for different sites and submission to City of Toronto on an annual basis
  • On-line banking, download monthly bank statements, retrieve bank account information, reconcile errors and taking necessary actions and follow-ups Reconciliation of bank account on a monthly basis
  • Bank deposits and preparation of deposits journal entries
  • Oversee visa card expenses and liaise with Scotia bank
  1. Organizational Responsibilities:
  1. Prepare for and actively participate in regular supervision meetings with the Finance Manager
  2. Participate in Agency-wide activities, meetings and committees as appropriate and/or assigned
  3. Maintain all records required by TNG
  4. Adhere to all Agency policies and procedures and ensures confidentiality is maintained on all personnel and agency matters
  5. Provide strong customer service when interacting with staff, external parties, and any visitors or callers
  6. Ensure confidentiality is maintained on all clients, staff and inter-agency matter
  7. Performs other related duties as assigned.

C. Qualifications:

  • Accounting diploma and a minimum of 4 years’ experience in accounting
  • Previous experience in not for profit organization preferred
  • Demonstrated expertise in accounting procedures and principles
  • Demonstrated competency with Acc Pac accounting program
  • Superior skills in Excel, and proficiency in Word and Outlook
  • Demonstrated accuracy and attention to detail, ability to identify errors and inconsistencies
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills; ability to obtain and provide required information to management, staff and funders
  • Tact, diplomacy and confidentiality
  • Ability to work independently and with a team
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines
  • Experience in a unionized environment is an asset
