Maternity Today is an international nonprofit organization dedicated to sharing evidence and resources with communities and health care workers in developing countries. Our office is located in Ottawa, but receives support from global health experts around the world. Our key priority areas include improving maternal and newborn health, adolescent health, community mobilization, global health research and advocacy. Maternity Today is seeking to recruit a  passionate volunteer, Executive Director.

Executive Director plays a lead role in organizational planning, leadership activities, stakeholder relations, and development and implementation of policies/procedures and serves as the primary spokesperson of the organization. He/she develops and maintains key relationships with all relevant stakeholders. The Executive Director of  Maternity Today works closely with the CEO. A bachelor’s degree in international development, global health, women and child health or related is required. A minimum of 3 years of experience in a leadership or management role in a similar non-profit organization;

  • Strong project management capability including managing timelines and deliverables

  • Solid understanding of the UN Sustainable Development Goals 

  • Proven writing and editing skills: the ability to draft memos & letters and edit reports and proposals

  • Experience in business development for non-profit organizations, including with government and private donors

  • Creative problem-solving skills, with the proven ability to advocate and gain support from others for new ideas

  • Excellent skill Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint), and internet/social media skills preferred and  tech-savvy

  • Strong multi-tasking and time management skills, and attention to detail.

  • Skills to collaborate with and motivate board members and other volunteers

  • Proven experience building effective partnerships, advocating, community building, and collaboration with sound judgment

  • Excellent interpersonal and effective English communication skills, verbal and written, and ease with public speaking.

  • Strong proactive, objective and innovative problem-solving skills

  • Must be self-motivated and able to work independently

  • Must be able to manage volunteers of virtual employees


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provides overall leadership on the day-to-day operations of the organization and updates the CEO  with monthly updates on key performance indicators.

  • Works with the CEO  in order to fulfill the organization’s mission and strategic plan 

  •  Oversees and implements appropriate resources including staff/volunteers and volunteers to ensure that the operations of the organization are maintained with the goal of future enhancement.

  • Responsible for signing all notes, agreements, and other instruments made and entered into and on behalf of the organization

  • Serve as the primary spokesperson of the organization and develop and maintain key relationships with all relevant stakeholders

  • Work within a volunteer organization providing direction and motivation

  • Overseeing the human resources function in collaboration with the HR recruitment specialist/ volunteer coordinator  including recruiting, supervising, and evaluating all team member

  • Maintains a robust social media presence for Maternity Today 

  • Carry out any duties assigned by the CEO as required.
