Employment Advisor - The Career Foundation

Position Type: 1-year full time contract (very good possibility of renewal)

Location: Hamilton

Report to: Program Coordinator

Experience: 2+years

Start date: Immediately  

Responsibilities (include but are not limited to):

  • Assists youth to develop workplace transferrable skills and life skills including teamwork, responsibility, self-confidence, and self-reliance in the areas of job search and job maintenance
  • Fosters job search and employability skills through one-on-one coaching
  • Demonstrates and discusses appropriate workplace skills and behaviours through workshops
  • Equips youth with the necessary pre-employment life skills needed to secure and maintain employment
  • Encourages youth participation in employability workshops
  • Assists youth in securing 12 weeks of paid work experience
  • Assists with planning workshop schedule and booking guest presenters and guest speakers
  • Maintains participant tracking document and records participant progress/outcomes
  • Prepare and submit subsidy claim forms to request wage reimbursement cheques for employers
  • Orders office supplies and ensures items are stocked
  • Opens participants files and action plans in the internal database
  • Keeps case notes and conducts weekly check-ins
  • Helps with purchasing and distributing participants supports

FACILITATION AND ONE ON ONE COACHING (75%)

  • Presents the program to community partners and applicants ensuring they understand the program objectives and the time requirements
  • Conducts accurate assessments of applicants based on program eligibility requirements and ensures all mandatory forms are completed
  • Researches, plans, and delivers a five-week, group job search strategies program
  • Creates, revises and updates workshop materials and activities that engage youth audiences
  • Professionally presents information to youth on topics including effective job search strategies, accessing the hidden job market, cold-calling, job posting analysis, salary negotiation, health & safety, resume & cover letter writing, developing strong references and successful interview techniques
  • Motivates clients through enthusiastic presentations and encourages participation in all topics covered
  • Assists youth in the development of appropriate work habits, behaviours and attitudes during their participation in the program and in the workplace
  • Possess strong familiarity with community partners, employers and stakeholders within the Hamilton area
  • Provides individual job coaching, encouraging youth to apply the skills learned in the program
  • Works one-on-one with high risk youth participants in developing skills related to creating effective self-marketing materials (resumés, cover letters, letters of introduction, follow-up correspondence, calling cards
  • Coaches youth on interview preparation and presentation
  • Discusses life skills with youth in a diplomatic and tactful manner
  • Oversees the Job Search area and assists youth with online job search
  • Maintains job search area with relevant information and resources
  • Provides youth with referral information for other services in the community
  • Logs clients job search activities and other supports provided
  • Updates participant database and documents activities and outcomes
  • Contacts youth on a weekly basis for update on employment status
  • Assists in developing weekly, monthly, quarterly, and yearly report

JOB DEVELOPMENT (25%)

  • Conducts outreach to the Employer community and generate employment opportunities for youth between the ages of 15-30
  • Maintains understanding of the position’s participants are applying for and ensures participants are properly prepared before contacting the employer
  • Responsible for marketing services and clients to employers, develops strong business relationships, establishes, and implements successful marketing and job placement strategies to meet or exceed targets
  • Initiates and maintains accurate documentation of contacted employers, job leads and any other job development activities
  • Provides effective individual and group job search and cold calling support
  • Conducts ongoing research to identify new resources that could be utilized by youth during their job search
  • Directs youth to jobs by contacting employers and obtains job leads
  • Maintains job posting and employer boards

Qualifications/ Skills Required:

  • University degree in human services or related is required
  • Excellent ability to develop rapport with youth
  • Excellent workshop facilitation skills
  • Effective case management/record keeping skills
  • Strong resume writing / critique skills and demonstrated ability to teach clients successful job search strategies
  • Strong command of the English language - A second language would be an asset
  • Proven ability to work effectively with a diverse population, including individuals with barriers to employment
  • Flexible team player – Willingness to take initiative to lend assistance where needed to ensure that the team is successful in meeting project goals
