Director of Development - Rainbow Railroad

This role:

You are an innovative, results-oriented, and highly motivated individual who will further lead Rainbow Railroad’s exponential growth. You will oversee the development and implementation of all fundraising. You will set development strategy and support staff responsible for donor acquisition, stewardship, and communications for our growing organization. Overseeing a staff of five direct reports located in both Canada and the USA, including a Senior Development Officer, three Development Officers, and a Communications Officer, you will also carry your own portfolio of major gifts donors.

You are ambitious, creative, flexible, and thrive in a fast-paced, busy environment. You know the importance of building and nurturing strong positive relationships with your team, partners, the Board, and donors. You have a track record of working with philanthropists, senior volunteers, and staff to identify and close principal and major gifts. You are balanced, innovative, and have the right combination of individual initiative and team-building skills. You are experienced in international development organizations, know how to lead an expanded development program, and have the ability to support philanthropic growth in both Canada and the United States.

Responsibilities include:

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive and strategic fundraising plan and provide direction and goals for development. This includes setting and achieving revenue targets, and ensuring the viability of sustainable revenue generating programs.

  • Oversee the development and implementation of all fundraising activities including major and mid-level gifts, foundation and corporate supporters, planned giving, donor cultivation, stewardship, and special events.

  • Determine and manage a portfolio of major gift donors and prospects for direct cultivation and solicitation.

  • Supervise and support the Communications Officer in developing a stewardship and communication plan.

  • Lead the organization in the development of a Case for Support.

  • Explore a planned giving program for the organization. 

  • Provide leadership throughout the organization as it relates to development, building a culture of philanthropy, and setting organizational goals aligned with the mission and values.

  • Provide strategic reports of fundraising progress.

  • Support the volunteer fundraising committees to maximize their own philanthropy and to participate in stewarding and securing additional gifts.  

Qualification and skills: 

  • At least five years of progressive experience in fundraising – CFRE is an asset.

  • A degree from a post-secondary institution and/or relevant experience.

  • A successful track record of personally identifying, cultivating, and soliciting individual donors at $25,000+.

  • Progressive team management and coaching experience (minimum five years).

  • Proven skills in leading and communicating fundraising strategy.

  • Demonstrated experience in building and managing budgets.

  • Ability to report on fundraising activities clearly and concisely, with emphasis on ROI and KPIs.

  • Demonstrated experience and knowledge of AFP guidelines & Donor Bill of Rights.

  • Sound understanding of and experience operating within CRA guidelines, that relate to financial and gift-in-kind donations and donor recognition.

  • Experience with and working knowledge of database software (we currently use Salesforce).

  • Versatile, skilled, and effective communicator with demonstrable evidence of strong written and oral communications/presentation skills.

  • Involvement, commitment, and support of the LGBQTI community in Canada, the United States, and internationally.

  • Ability to work effectively in a dynamic environment both independently and as part of a team.
