Victim Services of Peel (VSOP) is a charitable organization whose mission is to build hope and resiliency by providing 24/7 crisis and emotional support. We provide a range of programs that are united in the goal of supporting victims of crime or tragic circumstances residing within the Region of Peel. These programs include Crisis Support, High Risk and Human Trafficking Services, the Victim Quick Response Program+, Transitional Housing Support Program, Bail Court Notification Program, Safe Centre of Peel Partnership, the South Asian Family Enrichment program and others.

Position Title:             Crisis Intervention Counsellor

Reports to:                  Director of Client Services

Positions Available:

  • 2+ Part Time Permanent
    • Relief positions: availability during regular business hours
    • Relief positions: availability during evenings, weekends, and holidays

POSITION SUMMARY:

These positions provide immediate crisis intervention for victims of crime, trauma and tragic circumstance in the communities of Brampton and Mississauga. Services include emotional, practical support, referrals to other services/agencies, providing information on community resources, bail court support/advocacy.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS 

Direct Service Responsibility:

  • Assess and provide crisis support services and make referrals to appropriate services and/or agencies within the community via the telephone and/or in person (office/ scene attendance). 
  • Conduct individualized safety planning with persons who have been victimized through crime or tragic circumstance. 
  • Attend bail court as required by crisis team schedule to provide bail court support and advocacy for victims of crime. 
  • Provide support to the High Risk Program by assisting with VQRP+ applications in low to medium risk cases for counselling requests only.
  • Assess the critical care needs of persons immediately following their victimization and facilitate referrals to community-based services. Facilitate follow up contacts with victims to ensure their safety and address requests for additional support services. 
  • Respond to crisis situations and requests from Peel Regional Police and other community services for victim assistance via telephone and/or in person (office/ scene attendance). 
  • Conduct needs assessment to provide relevant information and short-term counselling to clients and their families and refer clients to long term case management programs within and outside Victim Services of Peel.
  • Advocate on behalf of clients and liaise with other community agencies and professionals regarding clients to provide wraparound support. 
  • Maintain confidential client files and document client case notes within the VSOP database. 
  • Educate victims and families on the cycle of violence and the effects of violence on children, along with other relevant VAW (Violence Against Women) information. 
  • Provide support with Staff back up and supervisor on call shifts.
  • Fulfills Team Leader role when necessary (i.e. last-minute schedule change that cannot be filled by staff/volunteer).
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education and Training Responsibilities:

  • Support volunteers by attending volunteer training one weekend twice a year.
  • Support training of volunteers e.g. with shadow shifts or in office as required.
  • Participate in community presentations including youth & fundraising initiatives as required.
  • Supervise student placements in the program.
  • Support the onboarding process for new in-office crisis volunteers.

Administrative and Organizational Responsibilities:

  • Complete all required statistical reports.
  • Complete weekly/monthly reports as determined by supervisor.
  • Submit timesheets in a timely manner.
  • Active participation in monthly supervision sessions with Director of Client Services, including an annual performance appraisal.
  • Actively participate in a Program Update, Crisis Team Meeting and Staff meetings.
  • Participate in agency fundraising events.
  • Represent agency on committee(s) as determined by Director of Client Services.
  • Maintain good staff and community relationships.
  • Participate in relevant workshops and seminars to develop new skills as required by the agency.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS

EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE:

  • Minimum of one-year experience working within a community agency providing community-based crisis intervention support, short term counselling and advocacy services.
  • Strong assessment and interviewing skills, including but not limited to, suicide risk assessment and safety planning.
  • Demonstrates counseling skills with an emphasis on crisis intervention and safety planning.
  • Knowledge of legal system (both criminal and family law) a definite asset.
  • Sound knowledge of issues pertaining to intimate partner violence, post-traumatic stress and the criminal justice system.
  • Knowledge of the general social service system and community resources available within the Region of Peel.
  • Understands and demonstrates experience of working with diverse communities within the Region of Peel.
  • Bilingualism and/or ability to speak French and other languages (pertinent to communities within Region of Peel) is a definite asset.
  •  Demonstrates capability to be flexible and to work under pressure.
  •  Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills.
  •  Demonstrates time management skills and efficiency in multi-tasking.
  •  Computer proficiency within windows environment.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including communication and conflict resolution.
  • Able to work effectively in a team environment that values equity, diversity and inclusion.
  • Ability to offer counselling services from a trauma informed, anti-racist, anti-oppressive framework while drawing upon other relevant theoretical orientations related to victimization.
  • Diplomacy and sound judgment.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Position will require working from the VSOP office, attending scenes in the community, and attending VSOP court office as required and scheduled. 
    • Remote work/work from home is part of VSOP’s pandemic response plan.
  • Successful completion of a Peel Regional Police detailed criminal background check and annual renewal check is required to secure and maintain employment.
  • Position requires shift work on a 24/7 rotating basis: specifically, the successful candidate will be required to work 7-hour shifts (not including breaks) between 7 a.m. - 10 p.m. in rotation.
    • Successful candidate will be required to aid the Crisis Program on weekends and statutory holidays as required. 
    • Candidate will be required to work on overnight staff back up shifts as per rotation and will be required to provide availability for 2-week overnight supervisor on call schedule on rotation
  • Access to a car and driver’s license is required; possession of Class ‘G’ License is preferable.
    • A vehicle including a minimum of $1 million automobile insurance policy with public liability and property damage coverage; proof of insurance must be provided on an annual basis.
  • All responsibilities are to be performed in keeping with the philosophical framework set out in the Vision, Mission and Values of VSOP.

EDUCATION:

  • College or university Diploma/ Degree in Social Services field including but not limited to Psychology, Social Work, Social Service Worker
