STAND Canada advocates to make preventing and ending genocide a cornerstone of Canadian domestic and foreign policy. We are dedicated to providing Canadians with the educational and advocacy tools that they need to take action toward a world without genocide.

Since it was founded in 2005, STAND has become the leading organization in Canada for youth-led anti-genocide activism. With eight university chapters across Canada, STAND relies on the strength of its national membership to provide Canadians with the educational and advocacy tools that they need to take action against genocide and crimes against humanity.

▼ Communications Team Member - Digital Media

The Communications Team Member - Digital Media is responsible for content and digital engagement-related work. The successful candidates will be conducting research, posting social media content, and responding to social media activity in the news in a professional manner to increase STAND’s digital media presence. You will be working closely with the Communications Directors and other Communications Team Members to engage visitors to our social media and create relevant content.

Key Responsibilities

STAND Canada has four focus regions: Darfur/Sudan, Iraq/Syria, South Sudan, and Myanmar. Each Communications Team Member - Digital Media plays a critical role in educating and reaching out to the general public about issues related to genocide and our focus regions.

Communications Team Members - Digital Media will be expected to:

  • Understand STAND’s mission, audience, and message to research, create, and share posts about different issues that concern the organization;

  • Work with the Deputy Director of Communications - Social Media to build and implement social media programs that ensure appropriate messaging is executed online through Youtube, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and LinkedIn;

  • Monitor social media groups, trends, tools, and applications and recommend actions/next steps;

  • Regularly report insights gained from social monitoring to the Communications Directors;

  • Work closely with colleagues across STAND to develop and post content to social networking sites;

  • Respond to social media inquiries in a timely and courteous fashion;

  • Communicate with and respond to STAND Directors’ emails and messages in a timely manner (within 48 hours);

  • Take interest and actively participate more broadly in other aspects of STAND, such as attending virtual town halls or communications team calls, as required;

  • Stay informed of the policy developments and on-the-ground developments of the situation in Darfur/Sudan, South Sudan, Iraq/Syria, and Myanmar;

  • Stay informed of comments made by politicians pertaining to genocide/human rights.
     

The ideal candidate will have some or all of the following skills, knowledge, and experience :

  • Genocide, human rights, and politics in historical contexts and current events

  • Knowledge of current STAND campaigns, and how they are relevant to the conflicts in our interest areas;

  • Branding and social media marketing

  • Technical knowledge and understanding of social media platforms, metrics, and tracking;

  • Proven exceptional verbal and written skills – be able to work on-call and respond to Directors’ requests, react to current events and disseminate information to our audiences in a timely manner;

  • Responsible, reliable, and self-motivated individuals, capable of working in a virtual team environment on their own time with minimal supervision, meeting deadlines, and answering emails within 48 hours.
