Communications Instructor - Peel Adult Learning Centre

Position Summary:

A Communications instructor in a Literacy and Basic Skills program located in Brampton will teach adult students communications skills in preparation for high school equivalency (GED) testing or college mature student testing as they prepare for employment, apprenticeship and post-secondary entrance. Regular program delivery is individualized within a group (classroom) setting according to students’ needs and specific to their goals.  Currently delivery (COVID) is Blended: students receive both in-class and virtual delivery. Majority of students are preparing for the GED. This Employment Ontario program is funded by the Ontario Ministry of Labour, Training and Skills Development and incorporates the task-based Ontario Adult Literacy Curriculum Framework. Delivery is year round.

Responsibilities:

  • plan and deliver 18 hours of Communications instruction per week to academic upgrading students
  • deliver in-class (Physical classroom) and through Zoom (Virtual/online) platform
  • integrate computer skills into programming
  • deliver individualized programs focusing on students’ needs and goals
  • develop learning materials as required to meet students’ needs
  • counsel and assist students as needed, giving prompt feedback on assigned work
  • develop individual learning strategies and plans for students  
  • conduct ongoing assessment, track student progress, and maintain students’ files

Qualifications:

  • experience teaching adults and proven desire to work with adults
  • clear understanding of the GED content and test requirements
  • ability to respond to a range of adult students’ needs and learning styles
  • understanding of how learning disabilities can affect progress 
  • ability to teach critical reading skills to adult students and help them apply these skills to a variety of reading texts and formats
  • ability to create and use meaningful tasks to allow students to apply skills developed
  • ability to identify writing errors (grammar, writing structures, organization, etc.) in student writing
  • ability to clearly explain the writing process to adult students, provide context, and develop learner writing
  • highly motivated
  • excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • ability to work effectively as part of a team
  • ability to teach and integrate computer skills
  • university degree in English or Linguistics preferred
  • teaching qualification mandatory (OCT, Certificate in Adult Education, or B.Ed.)
