Child and Family Therapist - Aisling Discoveries Child and Family Centre

Aisling Discoveries Child and Family Centre strives to give children and their families the skills and knowledge not just to cope, but to thrive. Established in 1998, we are an accredited charitable organization providing prevention, early intervention, children’s mental health and autism services primarily in Scarborough and East York.   We work in partnership with families and communities to strengthen the emotional and social well-being of children and promote their healthy development.  Serving almost 11,000 people last year, Aisling Discoveries vision is a community where all children reach their full potential.

POSITION SUMMARY: The focus of this position will be to conduct intake and provide treatment to families where referrals come from the Public and Catholic School Boards directly to a specific program (Priority Access for Students).  This work involves liaison and coordination with school board staff to support families to engage in mental health services, refer to other services as appropriate and transition out of mental health services in planful ways.  This position will also provide generalized individual, family and group counselling services to children (ages birth to 12) and their families.  This position requires providing assessments, service coordination, consultation and treatment services, including Brief Counselling Services.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: M.S.W. degree or related graduate level education in the social services is required, as well as a minimum of two years experience in the area of children’s mental health. This position requires functional computer knowledge and ability to operate computers and related technology comfortably and efficiently, from word processing to data management. The position requires basic knowledge of relevant legislation, community resources and services. Ontario Driver’s License, car highly recommended. Second language a definite asset. Eligibility for membership in the College of Social Work and Social Service Workers or the College of Psychotherapists is required.

HOURS OF WORK: 35 hours/week.  Consistent 2 evenings per week with some potential for increased evening time occasionally dependent on service needs.   Hours to be flexible.   Work is frequently performed in a broad variety of locations including family homes, office, school, and community settings.

DUTIES:                                                                               

  • Conducts family and individual assessments.
  • Engages with families in respectful, invitational ways that adapt services to the family’s needs and elicits client participation and feedback throughout the continuum of service including through the development of goals and treatment plans.
  • Provides family and individual counselling utilizing evidence-based, and evidence informed interventions within a context of flexible, family-centered service delivery.
  • Functions as service coordinator to ensure the development and implementation of treatment plans and to ensure that service, including intake/assessment, transition and discharge planning is delivered in a coordinated and timely fashion.
  • Develops and provides group work service utilizing evidence-based interventions, as required.
  • Collaborates with multidisciplinary staff and involves consultation as appropriate to support assessment, treatment planning, and implementation.
  • Participates in and contributes as a team member to the ongoing review and development of clinical services
  • Coordinates and plans client-centered services, attends and facilitates internal and external case conferences; advocates on behalf of clients with other service providers.
  • Maintains appropriate up-to-date recordings and clinical records in accordance with Agency policies and recording guidelines; including initial assessment, ongoing treatment, end of service and discharge reports.
  • Maintains up-to-date accurate completion of data input necessary for Agency information systems.
  • Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with community agencies to coordinate and integrate services.
  • Provides direct service hours consistent with Agency requirements.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 REQUIRED SKILLS & ABILITIES:

  • A sound knowledge of theoretical models, evidence-based and evidence-informed clinical interventions in working with children and families with mental health needs.
  • Strong clinical skills in assessment, formulation, and treatment with an ability to utilize flexible strategies for engaging and working with families, individuals, groups and larger systems.
  • Knowledge of family therapy, systems theory, group work theory, child development, and dynamics of family violence and sexual/physical abuse, is essential.
  • A basic understanding of the Child, Youth and Family Services Act is required.
  • Knowledge of the community served by the Agency; and a demonstrated understanding of access and equity issues; and awareness and sensitivity to diversity in the workplace and within the community are required.
  • Child welfare experience and fluency in a second language is strong assets.
  • Must have excellent interpersonal and communication skills with an ability to demonstrate flexibility and cope with competing demands.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong ability to work cooperatively with team members and consultants of all disciplines.
  • Additional skills include the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Must have good time management skills and demonstrate initiative as well as the ability to meet deadlines.
  • Sound clinical judgement, problem solving, and decision-making skills in combination with sound analytical abilities.
  • Contact with families and external professionals of other disciplines (i.e., education, psychology, social work, psychiatry, medicine, etc.) is frequent and therefore requires professional judgement and discretion at a high level.
  • Work is frequently performed in a broad variety of locations including office, school, family homes and community settings. The incumbent is required to work independently as well as within teams and is expected to engage in regular clinical supervision. Self-care and self-reflective practices are important aspects of being able to provide meaningful therapeutic support on an ongoing basis.
  • The position involves regular local travel.

SALARY:            $58,316 - $67,176
