Directions Youth Services provides 24/7 support to assist youth under the age of 25 to connect with supports, get counselling for trauma, mental health or substance issues, and transition to more permanent housing. Directions runs 12+ programs inclusive of shelter and drop-in, safe houses, detox and other unique programs for youth throughout Vancouver and employs more than 220 passionate, team members.
Directions is a division of Family Services of Greater Vancouver (FSGV), which for more than 90 years has provided a variety of essential resources for children, families and individuals in the Greater Vancouver community.
The Directions Youth Outreach program works to promote safer, healthier alternatives for youth who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. The focus is to promote awareness of, and connect youth on the street to, appropriate services and resources to reduce the harm in their lives. This position will consist of working with a variety of at risk, homeless and street entrenched youth under 25 (prioritizing youth 18 and under) struggling with addiction, intellectual, emotional and social challenges, mental health issues, concurrent issues and sexual exploitation. This position is based out of Directions Youth Services Centre and reports to the Program Manager.
Hours of work: Full time: 35 hours/week on a flexible schedule Monday to Friday.
- Oversee day-to-day operations of the program. Coordinate and evaluate programming to ensure clients’ needs are met and adequate staffing levels are met.
- Provide on-the-street and in-house support to Outreach Workers. Provide outreach services in areas wherever high-risk youth congregate.
- Provide leadership and team-building to Outreach Workers.
- In conjunction with Program Manager, provide leadership to the team through recruitment, development of training, supervision to staff, including participation in evaluation of staff performance and professional development.
- Identify and assess new street-involved youth in Vancouver and, if appropriate, link them with the Ministry of Children and Family Development and/or other relevant services.
- Initiate contact, establish rapport, and build trusting, supportive, therapeutic relationships with street-involved homeless youth.
- Identify youth’s individual needs and provide support, encouragement, collaboration and education to youth in matters related to crisis intervention, harm reduction, conflict resolution, community resources, alcohol and drug information, advocacy with the intention of connecting youth to services.
- Ensure staff duties are completed; standards, guidelines and policies of the agency are maintained.
- Provide support and debriefing after critical incidents.
- Field concerns, incidents or crises that affect program mandate, agency policy, personnel issues and community relations; bring issues and concerns to the Program Manager.
- Represent the agency at meetings, official functions, conferences, workshops and maintain current awareness of developments in assigned areas of responsibility.
- Work closely and collaboratively with all of Directions Youth Services, other community agencies, and government ministries as appropriate in the development of youth case management utilizing youth social work best practice.
- Be responsive to integrated case management plans, other service agencies, and health care professionals in the implementation and revision of client service plans.
- Assist youth in accessing community supports by advocating, escorting, and transporting clients to outside service referral locations, as appropriate.
- Actively participate in staff meetings, training, supervision, and employee evaluation processes.
- Ensure the highest professional standards of ethics, confidentiality, all program and agency policies, procedures, and accreditation standards.
- Maintain daily statistics and provide effective verbal and written reports.
- Ensure that accurate personnel, program and client records are collected and maintained in accordance with agency policies.
- Authorize expenditures within the existing assigned budget and make budget recommendations.
Education and training:
- Bachelors degree in social work or in another related field, and/or a combination of experience and education.
- Current First Aid Certificate
- Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Training
- Valid Class 5 BC Driver’s Licence – requires submission of abstract
- Minimum five years experience working with high-risk youth.
- Experience with adolescent development and issues involving sexually exploited youth, mental health, drug and alcohol misuse, concurrent issues and poverty.
- A combination of education and experience may be considered
- Knowledge of community, social and health resources
- Knowledge of the systemic issues that affect low income and marginalized people
- Knowledge of substance misuse, sexual exploitation, adolescent development and the problems encountered by chemically dependent individuals; basic understanding of behavioural management
- Basic knowledge of mental health issues and treatment
- Knowledge of and belief in the Harm Reduction model
- Ability to observe and recognize change in clients and staff
- Ability to maintain professional boundaries and establish/maintain rapport with clients
- Ability to deal effectively with conflict situations, manage aggressive behaviour, and use non-violent crisis intervention and behavioural management techniques
- Ability to work independently and as a team
- Ability to work in a culturally diverse environment
- Ability to organize, prioritize and meet deadlines
- Basic computer literacy
- Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position (carrying a full back pack containing harm reduction supplies, water bottles, snacks, etc.)
- 24-hour crisis response resource centre, and the streets of the City of Vancouver
- Ability to work days and evenings
- Ability to walk with a back pack full of supplies approximately 20-25 km per day
