The Promoting Life-skills in Aboriginal Youth (PLAY) program partners with First Nations communities and urban Aboriginal organizations across Canada to deliver community-driven, culturally-relevant play-based programming designed to enhance leadership, self-confidence, and self-efficacy among children and youth. Guided by an Indigenous community development model, PLAY and its partners create safe and inclusive spaces where children and youth can share their ideas, their hopes and their fears, and learn the skills to become positive agents of change. 

Reporting to the Senior Program Officer with overall accountability to the Director of Canada Programs, the Community Coordinator is responsible for supporting each PLAY program within their portfolio to become a high quality outcome-based program. To do this, the Community Coordinator is responsible for working with the Senior Program Officer to ensure on-going supervision, training, coaching and support of Community Mentors facilitating the PLAY program in First Nations communities and urban Indigenous organizations throughout British Columbia and Alberta. As a Community Coordinator, the overall goal is to provide customized coaching and support to five (5) assigned Community Mentors both remotely and in each partner community, under supervision of the Senior Program Officer. The Community Coordinator is also the support liaison for five (5) First Nation communities/urban Indigenous organizations with responsibilities that include developing and nurturing relationships with Chief and Council, supporting the design of a tailor-made program that meets the needs and goals of each community, coaching and training Community Mentors to become exceptional program implementers and reporting back any outcomes from the program to all key stakeholders. This position requires frequent travel throughout British Columbia and Alberta.


Job Responsibility #1: Community Engagement, Capacity Building, and Coaching (65%)

  • Work with Community Mentors to establish realistic plans that result in high quality, reliable play-based programming for children and youth 
  • Provide in-person and remote coaching and support to Community Mentors to ensure their goals are met
  • Research relevant information and ideas to support topic-specific challenges identified by Community Mentors
  • Work with other PLAY team members and Community Mentors to identify tools and training that are missing that will help to enhance the quality of program design and delivery
  • Support in the design, creation and maintenance of tools as well as the delivery of any necessary related training
  • Support skill enhancement workshops and opportunities for Community Mentors, which could include the planning, creation, delivery, and/or assessment of the workshop/opportunity
  • Support the coordination of complimentary program initiatives in partnership with internal and external implementing partners
  • Liaise with Community Mentors, Community Supervisors and First Nation leadership to ensure RTP and the Community Partner are meeting all requirements of the partnership agreement, and to create a strong support system for the Community Mentor
  • Ensure the tracking and completion of all required partnership agreements (including related policies) as well as administrative requirements (progress reports, financial reports, etc.)
  • Work with the Senior Program Officer to trouble-shoot programmatic and human resource issues that directly impact the success of the program and work directly with partner communities to resolve issues
  • Support with communication and engagement tools and activities including: the PLAY Hub newsletter, social media engagement with Community Mentors, and the Community Mentor Alumni Network
  • Support the coordination and maintenance of internal databases and tracking systems

Job Responsibility #2: Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) (15%)

  • Review and approve monthly program reports submitted by community partners
  • Follow-up and provide support to Community Mentor to ensure timely submission and accuracy of these reports as necessary
  • Data entry of surveys and incoming M&E data for PLAY West
  • Distribute and follow-up with Community Mentors about survey submissions
  • Work with M&E Officer to adapt tools to ensure they are user friendly

Job Responsibility #3: Project Budget Management (15%)

  • Review and approve monthly finance reports submitted by community partners
  • Under the direction of the Senior Program Officer (SPO), review and approve monthly finance reports within SPO’s cluster
  • Follow-up and provide support to Community Mentor to ensure timely submission and accuracy of these reports as necessary
  • Support the management of each PLAY partner organization’s designated budget
  • Liaise with PLAY partner organization’s finance officers and Community Supervisors to ensure understanding of Right To Play’s financial procedures and timelines
  • Notify community partners when reimbursements have been sent 

Job Responsibility #4: Other Responsibilities as Required (5%)


You are a self-motivated, detail oriented, adaptable and highly creative problem solver. You take an asset-based approach to working with individuals and communities. You are a skilled relationship builder and are comfortable coaching and mentoring adults. You enjoy designing programs and working directly with children and youth. You are comfortable with deadlines and able to work well under pressure (handling multiple non-sequential demands). You are able and excited to travel 30-40% of the year, and happy to spend the rest of the year in a playful, open-concept office, surrounded by innovation-friendly conversations. You have an understanding of Canada’s colonial history and how it impacts Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples. In addition, if you are committed to advancing work grounded in social justice, equity, and anti-oppression, this is the job for you!



  • University degree or equivalent work experience in any of the following areas: Indigenous learning, health sciences, outdoor recreation, child and youth work, education, community development and/or social sciences 
  • A Class G driver’s license


  • Demonstrated experience in program management and supervising (must be comfortable in supporting approx. 5 Community Mentors in various remote areas throughout BC and AB)
  • Demonstrated experience working with Indigenous communities and/or urban Indigenous organizations  
  • Demonstrated experience in budget management, planning and reporting
  • Demonstrated experience designing and facilitating workshops for children, youth, adults and large groups, or a demonstrated aptitude to learn
  • Familiarity with best practices related to child safeguarding
  • Coaching and mentoring skills
  • Attention to detail (e.g. planning and coordination, and managing budgets) 
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Outlook
  • Analytical and written skills, including research and writing reports
  • Able to use data collection tools for program reporting and evaluating


  • Fluency in oral and written English required; Indigenous language an asset


  • Courses completed or certificate training in community development and youth leadership programs specific to First Nations youth and communities in British Columbia, Alberta, and the Yukon. 
  • A combination of a completed degree/diploma program or the equivalent in sound experience, knowledge and understanding of Indigenous youth leadership and sport programming
  • Lived experience and/or understanding of Indigenous traditions and culture
  • Certified in suicide prevention (e.g. safeTALK)
