Position Description:

As the Director, Data Science and Engineering, you will be part of an exciting Data & Analytics Centre of Excellence (COE) that is a critical enabler of the development and implementation of our Finance 2025 Data and Technology roadmap that helps achieve the transformational aspirations of our Finance data organization. 

The D&A CoE has a mandate to improve the accessibility, speed and reliability of our critical datasets across the function and enable us to shift from data aggregation to enhanced value-add support services leveraging the latest technology and automation for our business partners.  


Job Duties/ Accountabilities:

This role is tasked with many important and exciting functions including:

  • Serve as a Data & Analytics COE technical lead, working with Financial and Data leaders across Bell and within the CoE to develop and prioritize initiatives, in concert with our Finance 2025 strategy and roadmap.
  • Leadership of the Data Engineering and Analysis team, tasked with maintenance, enhancement and optimization of the Finance Data Warehouse and critical finance processes.  
  • Determine optimization opportunities within our existing technology and data process landscape, to ensure that lean data processes are being developed and maintained within a scalable and stable infrastructure.
  • Lead the development of an operational quality control framework within Finance that aims to provide validation on CFO Certified data and access to key triggers, controls, notifications, dashboards, data anomaly detection identifiers, etc.
  • Support data model design, development and implementation within the Finance Data Warehouse.
  • Lead the development and maintenance of infrastructure required for optimal extraction, transformation, and loading of data from a wide variety of data sources using SQL and other ‘big data’ technologies.
  • Provide technical guidance and leadership to the Data Science team, tasked with the development of Finance AI use cases to help transform finance operations and drive savings and innovation.
  • Continue developing an artificial intelligence and machine learning practice to guide the continued transformation of financial processes, risk management and/or use of data and analytics, which includes the responsibility to synthesize and assess feasibility of use cases and provide technical leadership and guidance to team members.
  • Actively work with the head of Data Governance, Data Strategy and Architecture, other BI teams and IT to deliver our FDW roadmap and expand the capability of the team and our use of new and emerging technologies.

Everything starts with knowledge of your stakeholder, the technology landscape, the business goal, and the relevant variables.
  • Advantageous to have Internal Bell systems knowledge (ie: P77, PBW, Network Capital)
  • Insightful with a vision and knowledge around what the finance teams of the future will require and creating a plan to enable the transformation.
  • Excellent communicator with the ability to make a complex technology landscape “simple” for leaders and colleagues in order to drive change and enable decision making.
  • Influencer to bring many groups such as Finance, Operations, IT, and other BI teams together to achieve the desired results.
  • Professional with a track-record of building meaningful technical solutions from vision to delivery. You recognize that information and data are key business assets and you operationalize the application of data and information in order to deliver optimal performance.
  • Change Management Champion that recognizes the importance of quality of the delivery and how to drive the adoption of change.
  • Project Management experience to organize, execute, and deliver while balancing the three constraints of scope, time and resources.
  • Team Builder that leads, inspires, enables and develops the team.


Required Skills/ Experience:

  • Education:
    • Degree in Data Science, Computer Science, Information Technology, Economics, Statistics, Information Systems, Applied Math, Business Administration, Finance or any other related field (masters degree considered an asset).
    • CPA or related finance experience considered an asset
  • Experience:
    • At least 10 years of working experience in a data analytics or data warehousing team, preferably working most recently as a team leader.
    • Successful experience building teams and guiding them through successful analytics -, data warehouse -, data science - projects.
    • Experience leading team to build and optimize ‘big data’ data pipelines, architectures and data sets
    • Demonstrated experience in business process analysis, data architecture design and development, and the implementation of workflow enabled solutions and their intricacies in a finance environment.
  • Technical Skills:
    • A strong comprehencion and exoperience with data management systems and related architectures: Google Cloud, Teradata, Oracle, SAS, Hadoop (Cloudera), SQL.
    • A strong comprehension of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning and their application (and challenges) in creating relevant solutions for finance.
    • Experience with programming languages, data analytics, and statistical methods
    • Ability to deliver solutions through BI tools such as MicroStrategy, PowerBI.
    • Experience with relational databases SaS, Teradata, Oracle & MS SQL.
    • Experience developing full technical and solution design requirements including, considerations and best practices including SOx, audit, data/source reconciliation and related non-functional requirements (such as governance (data and program), access, security, backups, etc.)
    • Experience performing root cause analysis on internal and external data and processes to answer specific business questions and identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Analytical Skills:
    • Ability to transform data and affecting business processes in order to enable data governance and integrity.
    • Technical experience with enterprise data warehouse solutions, statistical analysis tools, database systems, and data visualization applications.
    • Familiarity with SAP data structures and capabilities, and financial processes that interact with SAP including IFRS.
    • Inter Personal, Collaboration and Communication Skills:
    • Detail oriented, comfortable working in a collaborative setting, comfortable working with senior executives, self-motivated requiring minimal supervision, proactive, creative and bold thinker with excellent problem-solving skills and an ability to work on multiple projects and meet tight-deadlines, positive can-do attitude, and demonstrate calmness and composure in times of uncertainty and stress.
    • Excellent communication skills, including experience in executive presentation, preparation and execution.
  • Leadership/ People Skills:
    • Ability to inspire and lead a large cross-functional group in a unified direction with a common vision.
    • Comfortable working, leading and managing change.
    • Demonstrate an ability to influence business leadership and executives
    • Communicative, and relatable individual who inspires others to follow
