Lab Analyst - 8 month Co-op
Location: ALS Environmental
Reports to: Laboratory Manager or Supervisor
About the Position
The Laboratory Analyst will work independently and as part of a team to accomplish a variety of lab tasks, including analyses, lab maintenance, and generating data. This position is responsible for producing quality data and meeting strict turnaround times by following Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and adhering to strict QA/QC requirements to ensure clients receive efficient service and quality results.
Specific Responsibilities
- Prepare (drying, grinding, pasting, homogenizing) subsamples, and extract samples of different matrices (e.g. water, tissue, and soil) for analysis;
- Analyse samples of different matrices using laboratory instrumentation to generate accurate results for clients;
- Perform instrument/equipment calibration, troubleshooting, maintenance, and/or repairs as required;
- Prepare samples, reagents, standards, and reference materials for analysis;
- Restock laboratory consumables/chemicals as required;
- Complete data processing activities (i.e. data entry into LIMS, calculations, evaluations etc.) and all required documentation;
- General laboratory clean-up and maintenance;
- Assist in sample flow and archiving as well as data archiving;
- Perform all required record-keeping and documentation;
- Monitor controlled equipment;
- Organize workloads to meet required Turn Around Times (TAT);
- Use correct methods in accordance with the established procedures and schedules while ensuring analytical quality;
- Observe established safety regulations and comply with all ALS health and safety policies and procedures;
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Intermediate English communication skills will also be required (auditory, verbal, written and reading);
- Basic user of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and Outlook), with basic computer skills;
- Organized, analytical, and process oriented;
- High attention to detail;
- Strong problem solving skills;
- Ability to handle pressure from high sample volumes and competing turnaround times;
- Work independently and also as part of a team;
- Strong work ethic and willingness to take on varied tasks as required;
- Commitment to excellence and a client-focused attitude.
Required Qualifications
- Enrolled in a recognized post-secondary Chemistry program or a related field. Completion of second year chemistry is required;
- Knowledge and lab experience from analytical chemistry courses is an asset;
Physical Demands
- Ability to lift up to 30 lbs./14 kg on a regular basis and carry for short distances;
- Manual dexterity to perform intricate and/or repetitive tasks;
- Wear issued personal protective equipment (PPE) such as dust masks, gloves etc., when required;
- Ability to stand for a full shift;
- Ability to sit at a desk and do general office work, which includes periodic sedentary responsibilities;
- You may be exposed to unpleasant odours;
- Please note that ALS operates 24/7 and will require day, afternoon, and graveyard shift work including weekends.
