We all like to pig out on various meat, bean and grain products. Okay, so I kind of threw bean in there to satisfy us vegetarians (we’re so preoccupied with reaching our protein intake that beans tend to play a rather large role).
But have you thought about your vegetable and dairy intake? Have you done more than think about it—perhaps, found a way to strike a healthy balance?
Health Canada says you need to reach a daily requirement of food from four different food groups: grain products (6-8 servings), meat and alternatives (2-3), fruits and vegetables (7-10), and dairy products (2-3).
Vegetable and dairy products tend to be more neglected than grain or meat and alternatives. The trick is to start your day well and then it will end swell (no guarantee, but it’s a nifty phrase).
Here are a few fruit, vegetable and dairy-rich snacks you can sneak into your daily meals to give your body the proper nutrients it needs.
Fruit and nut medley (fruit)
Chop up your favourite fruits, throw in your choice of nuts and enjoy nature’s simple snack. May I suggest berries and peanuts?
Avocado and cucumber (fruit)
Slice up an avocado with some cucumber and dip every other bite in a spicy sweet and sour sauce for flavour.
Raw celery, carrots and broccoli with dip (vegetables)
Chop up your favourite raw vegetables, find a low-fat or yogurt dressing for dipping and voilà.
Yogurt (dairy)
Easy—buy it, eat it, yummy! Try experimenting to find your favourite brand and flavour.
Banana and strawberry milkshake (fruit and dairy)
Blend one banana, two strawberries, half a cup of milk and a dash of vanilla to create a soothing, healthy refreshment.
Cheese and olives (dairy and something green)
Slice some cheese and run a toothpick through an olive. It looks good and tastes better!
Bananas and oatmeal (fruit and grain)
Adding banana slices to your oatmeal really makes for a delicious breakfast.
Hopefully these snacks will make a healthy difference!
