Even if we were hiring right now, I don’t think we could get past the fact that this applicant not only sent us one of those dreaded cookie-cutter emails, but he made it obvious by putting every company’s email address in the To: field instead of the Bcc: field.

It’s easy to tell which students are involved and which students are merely embellishing. The students who are genuinely involved tend to have better experiences and skills listed, and can talk passionately about the work they do in an interview.

The consequences for lying on your resumé can range from your boss or co-workers simply losing respect for you or doubting your integrity, to losing that entry-level job, internship or co-op placement you worked so hard to get.

When it comes to jobs, it doesn’t matter which program we graduate from or what school we attended, it’s a process of trial and error for each and every one of us. Any hiring manager will tell you they’ve seen the same mistakes from students and new grads thousands of times.
