Interpersonal discord can dilute the quality of your work life, distract you from primary objectives, and hinder your development within an organization. Even if your boss or peers behave inappropriately, it’s never productive to respond unprofessionally – as satisfying as it might feel in the short run.

When speaking to or leaving a message for hiring managers or recruiters, it’s important to follow some basic etiquette rules. Always sound professional and ready to speak to the hiring manager/recruiter… but also be prepared and have a well memorized or written out message in case you need to leave a message.

Starting a new job isn’t easy and knowing in advance that you’re going to have to take time off of that job because of medical reasons is even harder. But when I was diagnosed with a chronic illness, I found my work place to be more supportive than I could have imagined.

I recently got a promotion at work, which came with more hours, benefits and pay. Good for me, right? Wrong. The people with whom I used to associate (they worked on “my side” of the store in my last article) seem to have given me that cold “Why did he get the promotion?” shoulder.

Even though many of the negative stereotypes toward tattoos have become less prevalent, they may still remain depending on your company’s culture. Unless you want to be a rock star, artist or tattooist, you probably can’t have tattoos that cover most of your body because you will not be seen as professional.
