Marianna, a Nursing major at Ryerson University asks:
“What is the hiring process like for Nursing jobs at Northern Health?”

Comment From Shannon – Recruiter at Northern Health
Super question Marianna. After you apply to a position within Northern Health, a recruiter and hiring manager will review your application and create a short list. If you are shortlisted, you will then hear from a hiring manager to set up a time to be interviewed. It is then your time to shine in the interview! After the interview a hiring manager will check your references and ask you to complete a criminal record check before they can offer you the positions. During this whole process you will either have contact with a recruiter or a hiring manager. So you will have a person at Northern Health to connect with if you have any further questions or concerns along the way!

TalentEgg
Maria asks:
“What are the biggest mistakes applicants make?”

Comment From Shannon – Recruiter at Northern Health
Thanks for the question Maria! One of the biggest mistakes we see is applicants don’t personalize their resume and cover letter for the positions they are currently applying for! We want to see that you know about our company and why you want to join Northern Health! Cover letters are a great place to show us a little of you personality and tell us why you are interested in joining our team!

TalentEgg
Jolene asks:
“How can I make my application stand out if I don’t have any experience in the industry?”

Comment From Shannon – Recruiter at Northern Health
This is a question is one I don’t think we get asked enough! When applying to a position when you don’t have the exact experience, we want to see that you have made an effort to get experience or have skills that would be transferable to the job. This can be through clinical placement, volunteering, internships or co-op work placements. Show us that you are willing to take additional training in order to get some hand on experience or an idea of the type of work you will be doing if you get the job! Make sure you include this information in your cover letter or resume.

Hana, a Life Sciences major at the University of Waterloo asks:
“When screening resumes, what are you looking for? How can I make my application stand out?”

Comment From Shannon – Recruiter at Northern Health
When screening applications we are looking to ensure you meet the basic job qualifications. Therefore it is a great idea to have the job posting open next to you when creating your resume! Make sure you state or provided evidence that you meet those qualifications in your resume and cover letter. Even something as basic as stating you have a valid driver’s license if the job requires a valid license. It shows us and hiring managers you took the time to thoroughly read the job posting and matched your qualifications with the requirements of the job. Also including, in your cover letter, about why you would like to relocate to the community you are applying for, is always impressive! Taking the time to get to know about Northern Health, who we serve, and where we are located is always a good thing!

“When is the best time for students to start applying for jobs, before or after graduation? I am graduating in May this year and I would like to know.”

What a fabulous question! We encourage you to start applying 2 month prior to graduation. This leaves enough time to interview and complete the hiring process, and won’t leave us with an empty position for too long! It is always good to start looking at positions now and see what is posted and to become familiar with Northern Health job postings and what job titles require what qualifications. Therefore when it comes time to apply you will have a better idea of what you are qualified for!

“What can I expect during an interview? Is there anything in particular I should prepare?”

Comment From Shannon – Recruiter at Northern Health
Most interviews will consist of about 10 questions. These questions can range from your knowledge about Northern Health and the communities we serve, to your core competencies. Knowing about the community in which you apply is something you should be prepared to chat about. Managers like to know you have done your homework on the community in which you want to live and work. They also like when you know a little bit about the population of people you will be serving. They will also want to hear about your experiences. Come prepare with examples that you are willing to share!
