Great article! I have to say though…
I find there to be some diverging mentalities on the right “internet presence” these days. On the one hand, I am hearing a lot about how I should protect my online privacy and really control my image on the internet, which I try to do. I wonder about the flip side of something like VisualCV, it seems like it encourages you to put a lot out there about yourself.
As an aspiring journalist, I have tried to create an online image that is professional and easy to find – in the online writing business, you want people to be able to find you. At the same time, however, I sort of miss the idea that I can just submit a written CV and be considered for the job, and not have to provide a picture, a twitter account, etc.
Sometimes, I do feel a little overexposed. Anyone else ever feel like this?

I definitely often feel overexposed. The other day I turned to Cassandra in our office and complained that someone had mentioned something I said on Twitter in a real-life conversation.
When I was a teenager, I was able to keep an actual online DIARY (nerd alert) without anyone in my high school actually finding it.
However, I understand that today, it’s absurd for me to expect to keep different parts of my life separate from each other when they are accessible by anyone – and that the people and things that happen online are happening with real life, non virtual people (does that make sense).
I think at some point you have to (unfortunately?) make a choice about how you want to be perceived/how you’re comfortable being perceived, and pro-actively ensure that that is how you’re being represented when they search for you.
Yes, overexposed is a great term. Both LinkedIn and VisualCV seem to be following the Facebook example of online communities which IMO go too far in terms of privacy.
As employers develop new ways to attract and recruit top graduates, it is inevitable that employees will embrace multi-dimensional resumes and will be forced to decide.
