Like many other recent graduates, I currently find myself in a tough position.
With student loans to pay and a desire to land a position in the career of my choice, I have been swamped in an endless cascade of job applications, resumé touch-ups and bank account slumps.
With no end in sight, I find myself wondering, What I’m doing wrong? I have followed all the e-mail etiquette and resumé writing tips. I believe I am qualified for many of the positions I have applied for, but still no luck!
You’re not the only one
If you’ve been experiencing the same frustration, at least I can tell you you’re not alone. Especially now, in these tough economic times, an increasing number of university and college graduates are searching for work and finding nothing.
While the long and gruelling search is disheartening, we must not give up. Eventually, someone will call. No matter how many job applications you put out, remember, “If at first you don’t succeed try, try again.”
Confusion and frustration
Lately, similar to many others, I have been impacted by the brutal turn of the economy. I have been told several times by different employers that they could not hire me, not because I am not qualified or they wouldn’t want me to work for them, but because their companies are cutting back as a result of the recession.
As frustrating as it is, it’s important I hold my head high. Pessimissim will not get me anywhere.
I know I sound like an after school special, but it’s important to take my point seriously to avoid nasty side-effects like desperation, depression and low self-esteem. It only takes one employer to give you the break you need, so keep applying for jobs in new, creative ways; reach out to your network and make yourself useful through volunteer work. Eventually, the meaningful opportunity you’ve been waiting for will come.
Don’t give up!
I’m speaking from the same position you are in if you are looking for work and are finding nothing. Hopefully, soon I will be able to write another article about the opportunity which put me on my chosen career path.
But, until then, the only wisdom I can impart to my fellow job seekers is do not be discouraged. If you’re like me and need to get a low-wage job to pay the bills, that’s fine. But do not settle. Keep plugging along, applying for positions that will get you on the career path that you want to be on.
That job will come along eventually. You just have to work for it. It will not come when you’re sitting back, waiting for it to happen. You have to go out and grab it yourself!
So, what are you doing to land a job in these “tough economic times?”
This’s exactly how I feel these days. It’s kinda frustrating but anyways, as you said, sitting around or sinking into depression/low self-esteem would not be a good choice! I’m still keeping me motivated! thanks for this article!

Thanks for the great article – I find it’s easy to fall into that trap of pessimism especially fresh from graduation and trying to find your footing again after a 4-5 year commitment.
Thanks so much for the article. I thought I was the only one out there who cant land THAT job. And as you mentioned the economic recession isnt helping things either. Thanks again for the positive perspective and a motivation to keep trying and climbing.

and 4th point, be active. join all kinds of networking events. it may or may not be useful. but it gets you to know what are your peers doing and u can make new friends. in the long run, it’s helpful for sure.
i think that the Economic Recession would soon be over in the following years. there are lots of positive indicators in the world economy.
