Campus career magazines are publications distributed on campuses across Canada which include career-related articles as well as paid listings by employers and other advertisers. These career magazines tend to be targeted at undergraduate university and college students, and include articles on topics such as, “How to prepare for an interview.”
Advertisers include employers trying to reach students on-campus, product-based advertisers, and advanced university and college programs targeting the undergraduate population.
Brief history
The first on-campus magazines appeared in the early 1990s. The intention was and still is to help students find jobs.
There are currently three major on-campus career-related magazines, each with its own unique character, history, distribution and publication schedule. A fourth magazine is set to launch this year.
Recruiting uses
Employers use job magazines to advertise their employer brands and job opportunities. Examples range from full-, half- and quarter-page ads to sponsored editorials.
Cons
Prices for print advertising are significantly higher than most other recruitment methods, including online advertising or even campus career fairs.
Further, because the advertising is in print format, there are no proven methods of tracking Return on Investment (ROI) from a particular ad. How many people view the ad depends on how many pass through the location where they’re located (usually a career centre) to pick one up.
How to get started
Employers interested in advertising in an on-campus career magazine can inquire either directly with the magazine itself (My Career Magazine, jobpostings Magazine, Career Options Magazine) or via recruitment advertising agencies.
