Position Overview

At Nexen, we have new graduate and student employee development programs that accelerate your career and allow you to step in, step up and stand out. These paid work terms, lasting four, eight, twelve, or sixteen months, enable students to develop technical skills to complement their academic learning. Students, recruited from both universities and colleges, not only meet Nexen’s short-term needs, but provide a potential source of future full-time employees. To be eligible for the student programs, candidates must be enrolled in a co-op/intern program sponsored by an accredited post-secondary institution.

Nexen's technical summer student program is aimed at students studying engineering, geology and geophysics. During this four-month work term, students are assigned specific projects which give them practical business experience and the opportunity to develop technical skills in their designated field of study.

Job Duties & Responsibilities

• Performing XRF analysis on rock samples collected from oil and gas wells. The role will be to        operate equipment in the Core Lab, perform the analysis and interpret the data. Side duties        will be to manage all aspects of the Core Lab with the assistance of the New Grad in charge of    the Core Lab;

• Supporting Oil Sands Petrophysicist in their evaluation of oil sands properties. This will include      performing image analysis of core photos to extract formation properties, and to map regional    distributions of reservoir properties.

• Assist engineering staff with day-to-day technical activities;

• Research and accumulate data on engineering projects;

• Organize and interpret data into meaningful charts and tables;

• Work independently on a selected engineering project;

• Learn and use modeling software;

• Document and present results to work group;

• Project work as required.

Education & Experience


Start Date: May 1st, 2017;
Work Term Length: 4 months;
Education: 3rd or 4th year Geological Engineering student;
Eligibility: Student must be enrolled in a University Engineering Program
Number of positions available: 2;
