The following student position is a part of IBM Canada's EPIC (Employment Pathways to Interns & Co-ops) Student Program. This position is only open to students registered in a Canadian University or College program, who have completed a minimum of 2 years of their degree or diploma program, and who must be returning to full-time study upon the completion of the temporary IBM work term.

*This Student Position resides in Markham, Ontario and is a 4 or 8 (co-op) month work term commencing May, 2017.

The following job responsibilities for Open Source Runtimes Developer include:

If you are interested in working on some of the most cutting edge software projects in the industry, consider a 4 or 8-month work term with the IBM runtime technologies team at the IBM Canada Software Lab in Markham. The IBM runtime technologies group delivers enterprise grade runtimes that advantage IBM Cloud, Analytics, and Mobile software solutions and enable differentiation on System z and POWER platforms actively leading selected Open Communities and leveraging open developer ecosystems.

We develop the Just-In-Time compiler for various language runtimes (Java, JavaScript, Python, Ruby etc.) built on the Eclipse OMR Open Source technology. The IBM runtime compiler team also ports and optimizes industry standard open runtimes such as Google V8 and Node.js. We contribute industry-leading performance and capabilities across multiple hardware platforms (Intel, ARM, IBM Power and z Systems) and operating systems (Windows, Linux, AIX, z/OS).

We work with the Open Source language development communities, academia and other IBM development, performance and functional test teams across the globe. IBM Compiler developers have the opportunity to influence the design of future generation of hardware and OS/Kernel enhancements thorough collaboration with IBM hardware/OS teams. The IBM runtime technologies team provides you with an opportunity to learn about and experiment with different programming language implementation and a wide variety of latest hardware platforms. You will be exposed to a variety of tasks that help you build your general programming and problem determination skills as well as experience in working on complex global software projects.

You should be comfortable in an environment that is predominantly C and C++ based, but you should also show willingness to go down to the assembly language level. Polyglot skills are an asset, as we work in a variety of exhibited scripting languages. We have a demonstrated team environment, we follow Agile practices where work and design is collaborative, but also where individuals are expected to operate with a level of autonomy and responsibility.

Required Technical and Professional Expertise:

  • Experience with Windows and/or Linux operating systems
  • Demonstrates verbal and written communications skills
  • Debugging and problem solving skills required
  • Co-op or internship program enrollment is mandatory

Preferred Technical and Professional Experience:

  • Experience with C/C++ or Java
  • Experience with scripting/dynamic languages e.g. Shell, PERL, JavaScript, Python, Ruby and Java
  • Experience with computer architecture
  • Study / prior experience in compiler
  • Experience with assembler, tracing, performance, and additional OS's

Eligibility Requirements:
