Description of the Organization

For 12 years running, Chubb Insurance Company of Canada has been named one of the 50 Best Companies to Work For in Canada. We are proud of this award because not only does it make us a part of an elite group of companies to have been included for 12 consecutive years, but the driving factor in company selection is employee engagement, as measured by actual feedback from our staff.

We are a highly professional, niche focused, innovative company that is a recognized leader in our field. We’re not a typical insurance company - we are the business partner to the biggest names and corporations in Canada, providing the specialized, creative coverage they need to manage their business and assets. While we may not be a household name, our customers are Canada’s largest corporations and the high net worth individuals behind them. The names you read about daily in the news come to us for insurance solutions.

We are a global organization, employing approximately 10,000 people in more than 27 countries worldwide, including offices in the U.S., Canada, Europe, Latin America and Asia. Chubb Canada employs over 400 people in 4 branches. Our Canadian branches are Toronto, Montreal, Calgary, and Vancouver.

Chubb is focused on providing Property and Casualty specialty insurance through a global external network of insurance brokers. We do not sell life insurance and do not sell insurance directly to the public. We have gained a reputation that is second to none in the industry for providing innovative products, superior service and acting with integrity.

It is our corporate goal to be the Partner of Choice for our brokers, the Product of Choice for our insureds, the Employer of Choice for our employees and the Investment of Choice for our shareholders.

Sales and Assets

In 2009, The Chubb Corporation earned revenues of over $13.0 billion. The company’s total assets are valued at over $ 48.0 billion. Chubb Insurance Company of Canada had total written premiums of over $ 650 million and assets over $ 2 billion.

Career Opportunities

We recruit individuals from a variety of backgrounds, who demonstrate superior teamwork, leadership, interpersonal skill, analytical and decision making ability, business acumen, organizational skill and communication ability. The skill set needed to do our jobs is varied and challenging - applying often to those with a generalist interest, covering marketing, negotiation, analytical skill and more. The roles we recruit for are in Underwriting, IT and Claims.

IT Career Path

You will gain broad Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) exposure by rotating through a variety of areas and projects within the IT Development department in a 1 – 5 year span. The career path may eventually lead to a Project Management or IT Supervisor role within approximately five years. This will depend on many factors such as capability of the individual, desire to occupy this type of position and the availability of this position.

Training Program

Chubb’s Trainee Program is renowned in the industry for providing comprehensive and state of the art training. This training ensures that you begin your career with the tools and training necessary to succeed.

The Training Program is multi-faceted and begins with the New Hire Orientation Program, which gives you an overview of the corporate and Canadian operations. This is followed by a combination of self study, on the job and classroom training, both in Toronto as well as in our corporate headquarters in Warren, New Jersey. Each trainee will spend a few weeks in New Jersey, learning the skills to carry out their specific department’s work and getting to know their counterparts on a worldwide scale. Trainees often make contacts during this period who remain colleagues and friends for years.

Training following this introductory phase includes a multitude of courses and seminars, tailored to your particular needs. These could include negotiation skills, presentation skills, the Chubb Business School, leadership development programs as well as advanced skills and techniques specific to your department.

Chubb also supports your external training through our Tuition Reimbursement Program. This allows you to continue your education after university, by taking job-related university courses or Insurance Institute courses at no cost to yourself. There are financial rewards for course completion, as well as completion of designations.

Chubb History

In the 1880’s, when Thomas Caldecot Chubb and his son Percy entered the insurance business, nearly all commercial transport was carried out by sea, whether between Europe and America or between the East Coast and post-gold rush San Francisco. Recognizing the opportunities available in marine insurance, the Chubbs founded New York Marine Underwriters, a group of 100 investors who joined together to form an insurance partnership. In 1901, the partnership was dissolved and a modern corporation was formed.

Chubb continued to expand throughout the years, adding innovative new products and services to respond to customers’ needs. From war-risk insurance during the Spanish American War to steel suspension bridges; from ancient Egyptian statuary to 48-foot mechanical King Kong monsters, Chubb has faced every imaginable underwriting challenge during its 120 year history.

The first Canadian branch opened in Montreal in 1928. Today, Chubb is a global enterprise with a worldwide reputation for superior service and innovative thinking. To achieve our goals, we continuously evaluate and improve what we do.
